A sip for better health
Black tea and red wine may hold some promise for regulating blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. A study at the University of Massachusetts Amherst found that in the lab, at least, those drinks dramatically inhibited the activity of alphaglucosidase; an enzyme that helps set off absorption of glucose by the small intestine. Reducing the enzyme's activity slows the rate at which the intestines absorb sugar from food, potentially helping to normalize blood sugar. Further research however is being done.
